After installing Solaris 10 on my desktop, I found the learning curve just to achieve the functionality that is very easily accessible in any Linux distro not to worth the effort, especially since it sports Gnome. Maybe sometime in he future I”ll have another look at it.
More helpful tips
April 15, 2008I found some instructions on this site here, which I haven’t really explored but they seem likely to be useful. The site itself is labeled an Open Solaris Community site.

Having found a fair bit to read you can expect this blog, and the whole installation, to run at a glacial pace.
Getting the download disks
April 4, 2008Here’s where you download the disk images for software, companion pack & documents. You’ll need to register with a valid e-mail, but Sun doesn’t spam a lot.
I’ve narrowed it down to a couple of topics
April 2, 2008I’ve decided that, since I’m unlikely to do a lot of work to update this blog, I may as well chose a boring topic so that the lack of updates will irritate as few people as possible.
One topic I’m considering is the joys of keeping herbivores as pets – although now that Blogger have been stuffing me around I might set up a blog there for this purpose.
The other topic is – I downloaded a Solaris 10 dvd image and so a record of how I go about installing might be worthwhile. This installation will be on a partition on a fairly slow home PC, with no networking other than an adsl/ppppoe internet connection and with no real point to the exercise. I don’t know that the terms newbie & Solaris are really meant to go together, so we’ll have to see if its worth pursuing.
Hello class!
